| Greetings from the Sierra Club's Shawnee Group of Southern Illinois. The Shawnee Group is an activist organization with dedicated members working on numerous, local issues such as natural areas management; endangered species, biodiversity and wilderness preservation.
We are one of fifteen Illinois groups that form the Illinois Chapter. See our Group's service area map. Illinois' 25,000 Sierra Club members are involved in national campaigns of the Sierra Club that affect the environment of Southern Illinois. Those campaigns are listed down the left side of this website. Like the Sierra Club's founder, John Muir, our members and Executive Committee don't shy away from political battles when unwarranted development and egregious activities threaten the preservation of our region's natural resources. |
Local members also enjoy a busy calendar of club sponsored outings such as hiking, caving, canoeing, birding, and much more. You need not be a club member to participate. Club members also volunteer on many "service projects" such as Shawnee National Forest trail projects that repair damage caused by man and nature. The Shawnee Group meets monthly in Carbondale for an educational forum. The public is invited to attend any meeting or outing. You are encouraged to revisit our website for the monthly newsletter and to subscribe to our online listserv (an e-mail-based discussion forum): IL-SHAWNEE-FORUM. Historical archives of topics and alerts, as well as, outdoor adventure guides are also available for your review. Please consider becoming a member of the Shawnee Group and supporting your own environmental interests.
